  Your Teacher

I have been teaching guitar and performing professionally for 18 years.  Currently I am a guitar instructor at Music & Arts, Wilmington, Delaware.  I have been teaching at that location for 14 years.  Over the years I have taught one on one private lessons and group classes.  I am currently enrolling students at my home studio via skype.

My approach to private lessons has always been to balance the student's wants and desires with what the student needs to continue to grow.  There is always a basic musical vocabulary that all musicians must aquire. From that point forward instruction can become more individualized to help the student achieve his or her desired goals.  At the same time, it is important for the student to still be growing in experience and developing their musical knowledge.

Group classes cover topics such as music theory, harmony, improvisation, introduction to guitar, introduction to audio recording, and how a student can best leverage technology inside and outside the lesson room.  I have found that group classes can be a great way for some students to work through plateus and gain experience performing and playing alongside their peers.  I incorporate group lessons and classes from time to time within my instruction.

Testimonials

Chad Michael Jervis —To anyone interested in learning how to play guitar, I highly suggest Rob. I started with him in 2005 until I left for Berklee College of Music last year. I've learned so much from him and it has helped me tremendously with my music career. He's one of the best guitarists I know.

Jill Woodworth Simonds — Rob Barker is a fantastic musician and teacher. My son has taken lessons from him for over 7 years and vows he will never stop or switch to another instructor. Rob is fantastic with beginners as well as intermediate and advanced players. He not only provides excellent instruction, but also teaches music theory so his students can play and also understand music. The best part about Rob is that in addition to being an amazing teacher, he is genuine and sincerely cares about the well being and success of his students. You won't find a better instructor.

Robert Lingenfelter— Rob was the best thing that happened to me with my guitar and songwriting. I loved the way he would see things others never did in my work and we'd talk about it...he shared his opinion, which was always welcomed because he never pushed it on you. I would highly recommend Rob for guitar lessons. You won't be disappointed and will gain so much more technique and support than any other teacher I've ever had. I live 30 miles from him and wish he was much closer, I'd still be his student. I would also recommend that you let him teach you confidance while taken lessons, that has made all the difference...thanks Rob, you are a true friend and a great teacher...

April Mancini Anderson — Rob is amazing. I took lessons with Rob for about 4yrs and learned so much from him. I was big into song writing and singing and Rob always made sure we incorporated that into my lessons. When I became pregnant with my daughter I had to stop lessons it was defiantly one of the saddest days for me. Rob was not only an amazing teacher but a very close friend whom I miss dearly. I hope I can return to our lessons someday in the future.

Christopher Hopper — I have performed with Mr. Barker on many past occasions. He is a consummate professional, a pleasure to work with, and an all around excellent person.

Ryan Maney — Rob is the best guitar teacher ever! Knows how to teach and a great mentor. Wish I could still take lessons.

Robert Bobo — I learned from the best....Thank you Rob! I would not be half of the musician I am today if it weren't for taking lessons with you!

Anna Rispoli — Rob Barker was my first guitar teacher. To this day my brother and I talk about what a nice guy he was and what a terrific background he gave us when it came to learning music. Suitable for everyone and never condescending!

Zach Bair — Rob was my first, and only, guitar teacher up to date. I started lessons with him in 2003 and continued until I headed to Nashville for college. I've come so far as a musician because of Rob. He has taught me so much over the years and I couldn't have asked for a better instructor and friend. I highly recommend Rob! He's extremely kind and works with you every step of the way!

Dodie D'Alonzo Gray — Rob Barker is the best! My son began lessons with him in 2003 and continued until he left for college, last year. He has helped him so much and continues to do so, even though he is not currently taking lessons. Rob has the patience of a saint and truly cares about his students.
